Check out what Diversity Club graduate Mariah Jenkins has been up to since she left Denman. About Me

This is my second year as Dean at James Denman, but I have been a counselor at Denman since 2003, so if you are a sixth grader, I have been working here at Denman your whole life! Before I became a school counselor, I was an HIV/AIDS test counselor and an AIDS activist; I even majored in Political Activism at Brown University. I didn't realize I wanted to be a school counselor until I was 30 years old, but since then, I have never wanted to be anything else. I got my Masters Degree in School Counseling from San Francisco State University, which is an awesome place to study if you want to be an educator in San Francisco.

For the past eight years, I have also held an additional position at Denman as the LGBTQ Support Liaison. The LSL's job is to support Lesbian, Gay, Bi, Transgender and Questioning students and families, as well as to lead the school in making Denman a safe and encouraging environment. If you are interested in what we do for LGBTQ youth, their families and allies, you can read more about it here.

Outside of my work at Denman I have a lot of interests, including reading post-apocalyptic novels, shopping at farmers markets and cooking the great food I buy, bicycling on the Bay Trail, and staying involved in political activism. I'm married to an awesome lady named Andrea who is a rock and roll musician.

I honestly think that Denman is the best middle school in San Francisco. I love the diversity of the Denman community so much that I even sponsor the Denman Diversity Club.
